RSSAf Fellow and Member Finalists for 2013/14 NTSF/BHP Awards

The Royal Society of SA is delighted that the following Fellows and Members have made the list of Finalists for the NSTF/BHP Awards for 2013/14.  These prestigious annual awards recognize, celebrate and reward excellence in science, engineering, technology and innovation.  We wish all finalists good luck.

To an individual for an outstanding contribution to science, engineering and technology (SET) over a lifetime

  • Coovadia, Hoosen – Director, MatCH Health Systems (Maternal, Adolescent and Child Health), University of the Witwatersrand; and Emeritus Professor of Paediatrics and Child Health; and Emeritus Victor Daitz Professor of HIV/AIDS Research, University of KwaZulu-Natal
  • Cowan, Donald Arthur – Director, Genomics Research Institute; and Director, Centre for Microbial Ecology and Genomics, University of Pretoria (also under the TW Kambule NRF-NSTF Awards for research and its outputs, as well as the category for research capacity development further down)
  • Harris, William Frith – Professor, Department of Optometry, University of Johannesburg
  • Mizrahi, Valerie – Professorial Director, Institute of Infectious Diseases and Molecular Medicine, University of Cape Town; and Director, MRC/NHLS/UCT Molecular Mycobacteriology Research Unit; and Leader of the UCT Node of the DST/NRF Centre of Excellence for Biomedical TB Research (also under the category for research and its outputs below)

  • Cowan, Donald Arthur – Director, Genomics Research Institute; and Director, Centre for Microbial Ecology and Genomics, University of Pretoria
  • Mizrahi, Valerie – Professorial Director, Institute of Infectious Diseases and Molecular Medicine, University of Cape Town; and Director, MRC/NHLS/UCT Molecular Mycobacteriology Research Unit; and Leader of the UCT Node of the DST/NRF Centre of Excellence for Biomedical TB Research

T W Kambule NRF-NSTF Awards: To an emerging researcher for an outstanding contribution to SET through Research and its Outputs over a period of up to six years after award of a PhD or equivalent in research – sponsored by the NRF

  • Scriba, Thomas – Associate Professor, and Departmental Director Immunology, SA Tuberculosis Initiative, University of Cape Town
  • Theron, Dr Grant – Senior Research Officer, Department of Medicine, University of Cape Town

To a researcher for an outstanding contribution to SET through research capacity development over the last 5 to 10 years – sponsored by Eskom
