Society congratulates NSTF-BHP Billiton Awards finalists

The Society is delighted that a number of its Fellows and Members are Finalists in these Awards:

To an Individual for an outstanding contribution to Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation (SETI) over a lifetime

Coville, Neil, Professor
Professor Emeritus, School of Chemistry, University of the Witwatersrand.  For the use of catalysts to create new molecules, new reaction pathways and to generate materials that can be used in industry

Millar, Robert, Professor
Professor and Director of the Mammal Research Unit, University of Pretoria and Director of the University of Cape Town/MRC Receptor Biology Group.  He is an international leader in neuro-endocrinology and has made numerous discoveries which have been translated into effective treatments for reproductive diseases and cancers

Stein, Dan, Professor
Professor, Head of Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health, University of Cape Town, and; Director: MRC Unit on Anxiety Disorders at University of Stellenbosch.  He has made a unique contribution to advancing basic and clinical neuroscience in Africa

T W Kambule Awards: To an Individual for an Outstanding Contribution to SETI through Research and its Outputs over the last 5 to 10 years – sponsored by the National Research Foundation (NRF)

Schutte, Alta, Professor
Professor and Director: Hypertension in Africa Research Team, University of the North West.
For significant contributions towards the improved physiological understanding of the development of hypertension in black South Africans and the initiation of research programmes on the early detection of hypertension

To a Researcher, for an outstanding contribution to SETI through Research Capacity Development over the last 5 to 10 years sponsored by ESKOM

Cornish, Lesley, Professor
Professor (Physical Metallurgy), School of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering, and; Director of DST/NRF Centre of Excellence in Strong Materials, University of the Witwatersrand.  Instigator of the African Materials Science and Engineering Network (AMSEN) funded by Carnegie-IAS, and supervisor of many students from RSA and Africa.
