WGHS excels in RSSAf Essay Competition

Wynberg Girls High School in Cape Town won an unprecedented six out of the fifteen prizes in the Senior Category of the National Essay Competition this year including the Royal Society of SA/Claude Leon Foundation Trophy.   The Claude Leon Foundation kindly sponsor this annual competition.   The prizes were presented by Professor Jill Farrant FRSSAf of the University of Cape Town.
The senior topics for 2013 were :‘The doping debate: Can science stamp out doping in South African sport?’ ; ‘The sustainability of the South African coastline and oceans are under threat – what is causing this and what can be done about it?’ ‘A world without bees : what is causing pollinator declines in the northern hemisphere and what are the potential implications for South Africa?’

WGHS won 2 first prizes, Anna Jacobs and Grace Steel; 2 second prizes: Lindsay Powell and Lauren Mitchell; and  two Merit prizes: Jessica Hawkridge and Lauren Gildenhuys.   Anna Jacobs’ essay was selected as one of the top two nationally and as such will be published in the Transactions of the Royal Society of SA later this year.
