These are the 2020 topics for the Royal Society national science essay competition:
- Is there scientific evidence to support (or refute) Greta Thunberg’s assertion that humanity is facing a climate-induced emergency?
- South Africa has a wealth of medicinal plants. How should the government and research scientists balance the need to develop new medicines with the need to protect these resources?
- Have social media platforms (such as Youtube, Facebook, Instagram) benefited science and society?
In each of the three topics, the prizes are:
1st prize R5 000 * 2nd prize R4 000 * 3rd prize R3 000
Plus two Merit Prizes to the value of R1000 each
Plus “Royal Society of South Africa Avid Educators” prizes valued at R2 000 for teachers
