2010 New Benefits for RSSA Members

Transactions in 2010 – new publishing arrangements for greater visibility and access

The Royal Society of SA and Taylor & Francis are proud to enter a publishing collaboration for Transactions from 2010, which will boost the journal’s profile and accessibility both regionally and internationally.

Taylor & Francis, founded in London in 1798 and now operating globally, currently publishes over 1,400 scholarly journals, 340 of which are produced on behalf of learned societies and associations. The addition of Transactions will complement Taylor & Francis’ multi- and inter-disciplinary science programme, which includes prestigious titles such as Advances in Physics, Journal of Systematic Palaeontology, International Journal of Biodiversity Science & Management, Journal of Natural History, Critical Reviews in Environmental Science & Technology, and International Journal of Environmental Analytical Chemistry. In turn, Transactions will benefit from the many cross-marketing and profile-raising opportunities arising from inclusion in Taylor & Francis’ portfolio.

Taylor & Francis has been investing in South African journals since 1995 Transactions will benefit directly  by taking advantage, on the one hand, of local printing, distribution, and reduced rates for Sub-Saharan subscribers and, on the other, of international marketing, the latest electronic submission and peer review systems, in-depth editorial support, as well as online hosting, including digitisation of the archive back to the first volume in 1877 or even by a possible predecessor. Page charges will fall away and a new essay prize of £500 will be awarded for best paper published in the journal on an annual basis.

As RSSA members, you will enjoy a host of benefits through the new publishing arrangement from 2010, including:

§         a free member subscription to Transactions – timely receipt of the print journal – three Parts will be published annually in hard cover from 2010;

§         new online access to journal articles, including the full historic archive, on Taylor & Francis’ state-of-the-art online platform www.informaworld.com;

§         20% member discount to Taylor & Francis’ books programme www.tandf.co.uk;

§         a free personal online subscription to an additional Taylor & Francis science journal of choice from a selection of titles soon to be publicised through the RSSA web site;

§         the opportunity to submit papers for publication in SAPSE-accredited Transactions, with the additional prospect of standing to win the new essay prize.

To ensure the ongoing development and increasing impact of Transactions, RSSA members are called on to:

§         submit your best papers for publication in the journal;

§         encourage top-quality submissions from colleagues regionally and internationally;

§         recommend the journal and its electronic archive to libraries within your institutions or spheres of influence, boosting dissemination;

§         raise awareness of the journal at conferences and workshops by taking along promotional leaflets which Taylor & Francis will provide;

§         cite the journal wherever possible and appropriate to draw attention to research published in Transactions and to support acceptance of the journal into Thomson-Reuters’ Science Citation Index.

Taking advantage of the new publishing synergies between Taylor & Francis and RSSA, Transactions will be exceptionally well positioned to address future challenges and opportunities in African and international science.
